Más recortes en el Miami Herald

Mensaje enviado hoy por David Landsberg, Publisher del Miami Herald, a sus empleados:

From: David Landsberg
Subject: Workforce Reductions and Reorganization
Date: September 16, 2008
Today we are announcing plans to reduce our workforce by 119 full-time equivalents, or about 10% of all employees. About 80 full-time and part-time employees will leave the company as a result of this reduction, but we’ll also eliminate many positions that are already vacant. The necessity of these painful steps is especially disappointing because we believed the cuts made two months ago would be sufficient to see us through the sharp revenue declines that have beset the newspaper industry. Instead, we've seen that more is required to protect the financial health of the company, to ensure the success of our efforts to restructure and adjust to meet new competitive and economic challenges.Reductions will occur in several MHMC divisions and at every level of the organization. We will continue to adjust our operations to reflect volume-related changes. We will merge departments and consolidate functions where natural efficiencies exist. We will also continue to test outsourcing initiatives in areas where we see opportunities to perform non-core functions better and more efficiently. In this planning, our leadership team is making every effort to minimize the impact to our advertisers and readers. We are confident in our ability to navigate to a stable and prosperous future as an integrated media company serving as our community’s most trusted supplier of news and advertising information.Although some of these job eliminations will occur through involuntary layoffs, there also will be opportunities for employees to voluntarily elect a severance package where reductions are occurring in work groups of two or more employees. If enough employees do not take the voluntary option, then the work groups will be reduced, in some areas, by either function and/or according to least tenure. We are quickly taking steps to notify employees affected by this reduction and will be meeting with folks this evening and in the days to come to give them more information. Saying goodbye to people who have served the company well for many years, is the most difficult adjustment we are called upon to make. As in the past, we’re committed to make this difficult time go as smoothly as possible.McClatchy also announced other workforce reductions and changes today. A press release detailing those actions – amounting to about 1,150 jobs, or 10% of the company’s workforce – is available at www.mcclatchy.com. Many of these position eliminations are being managed through voluntary separation programs and attrition. Reductions vary by newspaper. The release also addresses other changes in our business model and operations. Our public service mission remains at the center of everything we do. Our role as a trusted news source is as important as it has ever been. We’ve got to deliver on this, and still be financially viable and safeguard our future. I have no doubt that the inspiration, passion and grit so characteristic of Herald employees – past, present and future – will continue to shape our efforts and form the foundation of future success. With my sincere thanks for your contributions and commitment, David Landsberg
